Thoughts on Psalm 119

Joe Wager   -

Read Psalms 119 – I know its long 😊

David writes of his love for God’s word and what it means to his life. Below are the verses that specifically talk about David finding “delight” in God’s word:

16: “I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.”

-David finds joy in follow God’s law (word), and for this reason will stay in God’s word to understand it!

24: “Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors.”

-David loves God’s word, because it helps him in making decisions based upon God’s will!

46-47: “I will speak of your statutes before kings and will not be put to shame, for I delight in your commands because I love them.”

-David will speak the truth of God’s word and not be ashamed of it. Even in front of authorities, and the word will hold true!

69-70: “Through the arrogant have smeared me with lies, I keep your precepts with all my heart. Their hearts are callous and unfeeling, but I delight in your law.”

-The world may ridicule you for following God’s word and holding to it but hold to it anyway. Keep His word in your heart to avoid becoming callous like the world.

77: “Let your compassion come to me that I may live, for your law is my delight.”

-Keeping in God’s word will make you passionate about the things God is passionate about; justice, mercy and walking humbly with God.

92: “If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.”

-David shares how loving God’s word, and being in it, has helped him from falling into despair among all of the troubles in his life.

143: “Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands give me delight.”

-Once again trouble has come, but God’s word brings comfort.

174: “I long for your salvation, Lord, and your law gives me delight.”

-David longing for God’s salvation and finding hope in the word of God as he waits for it. We too can find hope in the word!

May we find delight in the word of God every day, as David did. May we be bold in speaking of it and living it out without fear of shame.  May we find comfort and hope in His word as we experience troubles in this life.
